Don’t Call Me Raca! (Read Matthew 5:21-26)
Have you ever heard of the big, bad sins? You know what I’m talking about; adultery, murder, rape, etc.! But who made up this list anyway? I think we did. Putting sin into categories is our way of justifying the sin that we’re involved in. We’ve convinced ourselves that some sins are worse than others. So we say, “This isn’t that bad.” That bad compared to what? You see what I mean? All sin is sin. No big ones. No little ones. Just sin.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus poses a very serious question. “What is more important - our attitudes or our actions?” Don’t look for it in those verses. You won’t find it. But if you look deep enough you’ll see that it’s the question behind everything that He says in this great sermon.
We would say that murder is one of those big, bad sins. Most of us would say “I’ve never murdered anyone.” Jesus says “If you’re angry at someone without cause, you will be judged as though you murdered someone!” The consequences are pretty severe. What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Does Jesus mean something else? Are you a murderer?
