THE MARRIAGE PUZZLE   .    October Series

Marriage is a hot topic today. But what is it, really? How does it work? Is it worth keeping in our cultural family’s future? A poignant conundrum states, “There are things we know that we know; there are things that we know we don’t know; but there are also things we don’t know we don’t know.” Those unknown unknowns are where Jesus invites us to meet him in the marriage puzzle, helping us see that with marriage perhaps we don’t know what we don’t know. The Bible calls marriage “a profound mystery.” Jesus describes it as a gift of God full of creative meaning and transcendent possibility waiting to be engaged.  In our new series, The Marriage Puzzle, we’re not trying to make your marriage better, though that may happen. We’re not trying to help heal hurts from your past, though God can. And we’re not trying to get you married if you’re single, though God has been known to surprise us. What we are pursuing is inspired insight from Jesus on God’s beautiful picture of marriage that so often puzzles us.

Praising God in Nicaragua

What do you do when you realize you have one day to get ready to do God’s work?  So far here in Nicaragua we’ve had a lot to sort out.  We’ve had to figure out how to make do without some of our dentistry equipment.  We’ve had to organize 20 suitcases full of medicines and supplies.  I’m beginning to understand though that the most important thing for us and for our goal here was to sort things out spiritually with the One who called us here.  We began the day by attending worship at a local church.  It was incredibly moving and humbling to see how joyful and unabashed these people are when it comes praising God.  This church was not the most elegant or rich but it was without a doubt housing the most open-hearted celebration of Love I have ever experienced.  Later in the afternoon we were faced with the task of preparing for our first clinical day tomorrow.  As important a it was to organize our supplies, my greatest satisfaction came from seeing our team work together for the first time to come up with a game-plan.  I thank God with all my heart for surrounding me with a group of people that are kind, flexible, gifted and faithful; people who can set an example for me in every sense.  As we wrapped the day up with some worship time I really got the sense that we are all on the same page.  We are ready to get out there not just to help the sick, but to love these people the way that we so far have loved each other; because God has loved us.  Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!
