“Liars. Lustful. Lazy. That’s what you people are!” Says Epimenides, one of the Seven Wise Men of Greece. We’re paraphrasing, of course, but he was merely summarizing the self-confessed national moral trait of the people of Crete.

Into the cesspool of Cretan self-indulgence, Paul sends Titus as a minister of the gospel, not to “Tell ‘em how it is,” but to “Tell ‘em how it can be” when Christ is welcomed into their lives, homes, church and community. A song from the Broadway musical Wicked says, “I Have Been Changed for Good”. Such is the theme of the letter of Titus. And having been changed, we now become part of the evidence for how “good WORKS!”

• WORSHIP

3. We value communication that is relevant to our culture. (1 Cor. 9:19-23, 1 Cor. 14:6-12)

4. We value creativity in representing truth. (Ex. 35:35, 1 Cor. 10:31)

5. We value excellence of presentation. (Ex. 23:19, Col. 3:23)

• MINISTRY

7. We value development of the artist as worshipper. (John 15:5-8, Eph 5:1-10)

9. We value empowerment of the laity to minister.

The use of the arts in corporate worship gives creativity a chance to do what words cannot. For believer and unbeliever alike, the arts in worship have a special place, as a reflection of Creator God, to communicate in ways that engage our senses and prompt us to respond. God uses art every day to call our name, and He is redeeming art that has been distracted and wandered off.

“Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His Beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose – and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” (William Temple)
