THE MARRIAGE PUZZLE   .    October Series

Marriage is a hot topic today. But what is it, really? How does it work? Is it worth keeping in our cultural family’s future? A poignant conundrum states, “There are things we know that we know; there are things that we know we don’t know; but there are also things we don’t know we don’t know.” Those unknown unknowns are where Jesus invites us to meet him in the marriage puzzle, helping us see that with marriage perhaps we don’t know what we don’t know. The Bible calls marriage “a profound mystery.” Jesus describes it as a gift of God full of creative meaning and transcendent possibility waiting to be engaged.  In our new series, The Marriage Puzzle, we’re not trying to make your marriage better, though that may happen. We’re not trying to help heal hurts from your past, though God can. And we’re not trying to get you married if you’re single, though God has been known to surprise us. What we are pursuing is inspired insight from Jesus on God’s beautiful picture of marriage that so often puzzles us.

Hometown: Born in Kansas City, MO - raised in northern Arizona

My Spiritual Journey:

I grew up as a church-going “good boy”, achieved Eagle Scout and graduated in the top of my class. At 15, I started leading a double life – “good kid” exterior, but covering a rebellious and self-centered heart. The consequences of my sin hit me hard as a freshman at Arizona State University. But beyond the judgement I feared, to my utter surprise, God hit me even harder with His mercy, grace and love. Love like this is worth my life!

How I Ended Up at UBC:

I was humbled and privileged to be called to UBC in 1993. Though I had long admired UBC’s creative ministries of outreach and love, I never dreamed I would one day have the opportunity of serving here. Today, I am more excited than ever to be a part of such a vibrant community of Christ’s love in such a fascinating international city.

What I do:

My top goals are:

1. Make JESUS happy!

2. Steward myself to maximum health – spiritually, physically, emotionally, mentally & relationally.

3. Guard and guide our staff & people to find your place and do your part” to advance Christ’s kingdom

4. Love, lead and feed our people through messages from God’s living Word for life-change in Christ.

Dream for UBC:

To become all God wants us to be, making the most of the time, place, relationships and opportunities He grants us by His grace. To know Him and make Him known as we trust Him together.

What I love about UBC: How much it feels like home to so many people from so many places as together we become all God wants us to be - a taste of heaven on earth.

Before UBC I was....

pastor of an inner-city church in Little Rock, Arkansas for 10 years. This church was also a creative, daring, multi-racial, Christian community of grace and truth in the heart of the city with a heart for the world.

Hobbies:

I love eating all kinds of food. I enjoy all kinds of music (with 5000 songs on my ipod).  I have fun going to movies and riding my Harley.  I also like to play piano, guitar, trumpet & fluglehorn. And, when presented with the opportunity, have been known to free dive and hunt fish with an Hawaiian sling.

Books everybody should read at least once – (that I tend to reread from time to time)

• Every Christian should read Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren (Rick and I graduated from the same seminary. So far I haven’t written a global all-time best seller…)
• Every man should read Wild At Heart by John Eldredge on the male experience
• The Friendship Factor by Alan Loy McGinnis is a classic on being a friend and building better relationships, using Jesus as the prime example on how to do it.
Everybody with any relational life will benefit from this one.
• Every achiever should read Peak Performance Principles for High Achievers by John Noe is a favorite motivational book to me on being and becoming your personal best
• Every parent should read The Chronicles of Narnia (Seven Volumes) preferably out loud and to your children. Don’t settle for the movies. Let these charming stories enchant your children’s imaginations. Some day the deeper truths embedded will come alive in them.
• Every leader should read The Next Generation Leader by Andy Stanley. This gem is one of the most concise, practical and helpful tools on leadership development I’ve ever read.
• Every Bible student and would be Bible teacher will grow from time in Dynamic Bible Study Methods by Rick Warren. Not meant to be read in a single setting, this is like a tool shed you use to meet 12 different needs.
