The Environmental Protection Agency claims the average American produces about 4.4 pounds of garbage a day, 29 pounds per week & 1,600 pounds a year. No, we’re not trying to make you feel guilty. In fact, Americans are not the #1 garbage producer in the world…

But consumer culture makes it all too easy to take the priceless & treat it as if it were meant merely to be used up then thrown on the trash heap. In our new series we let God’s Word teach us how to treasure what truly matters & show that family, marriage, our bodies, time & income are so much more than Disposable.

Dominican Republic Trip Recap!

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

How great has been God’s grace since we arrived in San Juan de La Maguana!  All the fears and doubts we might have had before the trip, God, not only has dissipated but has also opened doors to new horizons.  We came to serve 150 children and the number has increased to almost 500 which have absorbed from other churches.  Instead of one shift, we now cover three.  And the budget that we had has miraculously multiplied to accomplish this.  What more can we ask?  What better proof that for God nothing is impossible?  The entire team feels blessed to be God’s instrument for His plan because we certainly never envisioned this.

The first day we arrived at San Juan we met with the director of the school to become familiar with the school curriculum, with the students, and to share the activities that we planned to carry out.  Next day in the morning, we met the Pastor from the church next door and talked about their Sunday school program and about the needs of the neighborhood.  That evening we attended their service and it was impressive to see that many people gather in such a small place, in spite of the heavy rain, and the strong faith that was evident.  It was fabulous to feel so welcomed, to feel the presence of the Spirit and to feel the miracle of God that evening.

Our second day in San Juan was even more exciting and moving when we met Pastor Joel.  Not only he is a living testimony of God’s grace, but he lives totally committed to reach extremely poor children in the most undesirable neighborhoods.  We were so touched by what he described that the following day we decided to stop by unexpectedly at his VBS. What we saw was beyond what we had imagined.  At that moment there was not a single doubt in any of us that we wanted to participate in his ministry.  His tiny church consists of a bare floor, hot and humid 550 sq. ft. room.  Under the most furious rainstorm, there were about 80 children there that afternoon, barefooted and dirty, singing and praising God, and immediately we joined into the songs.  We had taken sandwiches and juice because we knew that most of these children would not have had anything to eat all day.  One little boy held on to his sandwich and when we asked him why he wasn’t eating it, he said that he wanted it to take to his mother who did not have any food.   Fortunately, there was enough not only for his mother but for everyone to have seconds as well.   We left drenched in water and covered in mud but filled with joy.

The following days were hectic preparing activities, helping the VBS and coordinating everything, but we felt blessed to see how God’s grace was guiding us and sending Angels our way to help achieve His plan and to give us the strength we needed. We used to spend the mornings with the kids at the school that was co-sponsored by Alfalit, in the afternoons we helped the church and after that, we went to the suburbs where Pastor Joel gather “his kids”. Without any doubt, these kids were really in need. It was admirable how the Pastor was able to keep the order and the peace among all the kids that some days were more than 100.

The coordination and the willingness to help between the Pastors and the school for the good of the kids was remarkable, and at the wend of the week, even though we felt running out of energy and sadness because of our departure,  we felt that God was planting seeds in each kid that will have its fruits.

Day 5!

This day can easily be described as a day full of mixed of emotions. Since it was the last day we would see the kids of la chureca we played harder than ever. Goodbyes were full of tearstained faces and smiles that were remembering the fun times that were shared, and that was just our morning. After lunch we were lucky enough to meet some of the middle schoolers and high schoolers that had graduated from the school and were granted scholarships to continue their education. We enjoyed the rest of the beautiful afternoon relaxing and playing on the beach. I find it mind blowing how such good friendships were made in just a few hours. Our day ended with a bonfire where we worshiped, encouraged, and reflected on how God has worked in our lives during the trip.

Even though I am devastated to be leaving the friends made and experiences had I am so ready to bring the God I experienced here back to you all in Miami. I hope you are ready for his power and love, it’s overwhelming. – Rebecca Medina

Today was absolutely amazing. I’m not sure of other ways to describe it, except that God was present in everything we did. We woke up this morning and headed to the home of Miss Ruby. Miss Ruby passed away about a year and a half ago, but her legacy lives on through her home and family members. For the next 4 hours (seriously 4 hours!) we prayed for each other and everybody on the team will tell you it felt like it only lasted 15 minutes. The Holy Spirit was present as we prayed and our team cannot wait to share the experiences we had in Miss Ruby’s home when we get back to the States. So many times we put God into a box of our expectations and our preferred methods of worship… but there is so much power when we tear down the box and let God work in serious ways!

The rest of the day was full of joy. We picked up the boys and girls from Casa Havilah and Casa Robles – which are two rescue homes for kids from La Chureca. These homes serve as safe houses and house between 10-15 kids at each. We brought the kids back to where we are staying and had a POOL PARTY! We played and played and played and once again gave and received so much love from these children. After they returned back to their homes, we spent some time sorting through the bags of donations we brought and making it easy for the missionaries to distribute those items.

Our night was capped off with a birthday cake and celebration for our youngest team member, Katie Gray – who turned 6 today! Make sure and wish her a Happy Nicaraguan birthday when you see her back in Miami.

Thank you to all the parents for allowing your students to go on this trip – God worked a miracle in the team of 30 He assembled. And thanks to everyone who is praying for us.

Day 3!

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

We prayed for God to bind the evil of La Chureca while we are here and He has. As we are here for these kids God is allowing us freedom to let these kids experience Him through us. As we entered the school the kids erupted again, just wanting us to hold them and play. It was awesome to see our teenagers love on these kids from La Chureca. They do not know any other kind of love except for the love of Jesus. Here in the darkness of this horrible place is the light of Christ. It says in Psalm 91:2 ” My refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust”,Collegio Cristiano is exactly this verse for these kids in La Chureca. Jesus will always provide for His Beloved! – Anthony Fadelle (Nino)

3/13/2011

After a long day of traveling we’ve arrived in Nicaragua to some down time on the “3rd floor” overlooking the mountains and preparing for our week. I am already surprised at how beautiful Nicaragua is and I can’t wait to see the natural beauty of this country, which God has created. Tonight, I’m looking forward to seeing the stars, something which we don’t get much of in Miami. Myself and our team can’t wait to start working with the children tomorrow! Hola to everyone in Miami – already looking forward to sharing about our week with you! – Katie Martinez

Day 2!

3/14/2011

Today we went to the school in La Chureca and met all of the kids. Right when we walked in the kids immediately started playing with us and had smiles on their faces. It was amazing to see how happy they were to hang out with us. We played with them a lot outside during their recess and then read them books in Spanish – which was a little bit of a mission, but the kids liked it. We played a little more and then it was lunch time. After that, we took the 1st grade students on the bus to the zoo. Unfortunately the zoo was closed, but the volcano was right around the corner so we headed there. Once we got to the top of the volcano – we each were responsible for one kid and hiked to various places. We showed the kids the volcano and they had a lot of fun. Then we headed back to La Chureca and walked the kids to school and we came back to our site.

When we first drove into La Churca this morning, I got very emotional. I’ve been other places before, but have never seen poverty to this extent – the kids are surrounded by trash. Spending time with them though brought me back up. I saw God in those kids – who were happy, and showed us immense love despite their living situation. They didn’t really stop smiling. Can’t wait to see them tomorrow and for the next few days! – Kaela Jimenez
