The Environmental Protection Agency claims the average American produces about 4.4 pounds of garbage a day, 29 pounds per week & 1,600 pounds a year. No, we’re not trying to make you feel guilty. In fact, Americans are not the #1 garbage producer in the world…

But consumer culture makes it all too easy to take the priceless & treat it as if it were meant merely to be used up then thrown on the trash heap. In our new series we let God’s Word teach us how to treasure what truly matters & show that family, marriage, our bodies, time & income are so much more than Disposable.

Lightning Strikes at Open House Ministries

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Open House Ministries (OHM) has seen its share of disaster! Our ministry was born out of disaster relief for Hurricane Andrew. But now, OHM is taking something destructive and turning it into something positive!

OHM is located next to the Everglades, so lightning strikes are very familiar. Our children choose LIGHTNING as the name for their elementary soccer team. You might wonder how soccer can be ministry, but I promise you – IT IS!

As the children work together to become a team, we are crossing racial boundaries that have existed for decades. Our team has children from Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala playing right beside the native Homestead children. As the children learn to kick, dribble and pass, they discover success – a foreign concept to many of them.

At the beginning of every practice, the children do their homework. In a community where only 50% of the children graduate high school, this little bit of homework help could ensure educational success as well.

At the end of every practice, the team gathers for a time of devotion. The children learn about character and integrity by looking at the character of God!

Soccer can be ministry! While lightning can be a destructive force, OHM Lightning has proven to be an awesome example of God’s transforming power!
